95. What is the teaching in the Bible regarding wealth?
a. Honest work and labour should be rewarded. The Bible says:”for the labourer deserves his wages” (Luke 10, 7); “If anyone will not work, let him not eat (2Thessalonians 3, 10).”
b. What the Bible calls “greed” is fundamentally different from proper income. Greed denotes benefitting oneself at others expense, to be intent only on profit, and to use every type of improper means to obtain that profit for oneself; thus the Bible admonishes us :”You shall not covet your neighbors house, …or his ox or his ass, or anything that is your neighbor’s” (Exodus 20, 17); “not greedy for gain” (1Timothy3, 3, 8). Proper income indicates that accumulated through honest and upright labour and it is a blessing from God (seeDeuteronomy 28, 2-6).
c. The Bible clearly censures oppression and exploitation (see Amos 2, 6-7; 6, 3-7; 8, 4-10; James 5, 1-4); it opposes exorbitant interest and bribes (Exodus 23, 8; Psalm 15, 5).
d. We should also view all types of proper income as something entrusted to us by God (see Luke 19, 11-13) and should neither squander nor hoard it; but should follow God’s will in its use, giving willingly to aid others(Acts 20,33-35; Galatians 6,10)and willingly make offerings(Exodus 35,4; 2Corinthians 9,6-8).
