    LET'S WATCH OUR WORDS
    Bible Reading:
    Ecclesiastes 5: 1-7

    1 Walk prudently when you go to the house of God; and draw near to hear rather than to give the sacrifice of fools, for they do not know that they do evil.

    2 Do not be rash with your mouth,
    And let not your heart utter anything hastily before God.
    For God is in heaven, and you on earth;
    Therefore let your words be few.

    3 For a dream comes through much activity,
    And a fool’s voice is known by his many words.

    4 When you make a vow to God, do not delay to pay it;
    For He has no pleasure in fools.
    Pay what you have vowed?

    5 Better not to vow than to vow and not pay.

    6 Do not let your mouth cause your flesh to sin, nor say before the messenger of God that it was an error. Why should God be angry at your excuse and destroy the work of your hands?

    7 For in the multitude of dreams and many words there is also vanity. But fear God.

    The wording of these first verses is old but their application is still relevant. What are we thinking about as we go into our church buildings or sanctuary or assembly hall where we will join others in worship? Many Christians take time to quietly sit for a few moments and seek God’s blessing for the service or the occasion. But many don’t. They are still talking or thinking about yesterday’s problems. Solomon says we should go to listen rather than to talk too much.
    The Hebrew word for “fool” covers many meanings. It can be a thoughtless person, a self-confident person, one who chatters, and one who feels no guilt, a person who ignores God. Each meaning is a rebuke to any of us who think lightly of worshipping God. A fool has no sense of unworthiness or humility in approaching God. He may even think he is doing God a favour by speaking to Him. Obviously our attitude as we approach God at any time anywhere should be one of humility, recognising we are only accepted because of Jesus Christ and His work for us.

    Solomon also includes a warning about vows. These were a serious matter to the ancient Hebrews. Once made they must be kept. Solomon said it plainly, “It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfil it.” Perhaps one place where we may fail here is in our giving. It is easy to make a promise under the pressure of an emotional appeal but then comes the difficulty of fulfilling of our promise. Or we may decide to give a tithe of all we earn to God and then find that the one tenth looks larger than the other nine-tenths. We need to be honest with God and give Him what we have promised.

    Can we ask God to make us more careful in the things we say and the promises we make? We need to watch our words, our promises, and our intentions in our daily walk with the Lord. He sees and knows it all. We must remember with whom we are dealing - not merely man but God Himself. Everything is open before Him.

    谨慎言语

    读经:
    传道书五章1至7节

    1你到神的殿要谨慎脚步。因为近前听,胜过愚昧人献祭(注:或作“胜过献愚昧人的祭”),他们本不知道所做的是恶。

    2你在神面前不可冒失开口,也不可心急发言。因为神在天上,你在地下,所以你的言语要寡少。

    3事务多,就令人做梦;言语多,就显出愚昧。

    4你向神许愿,偿还不可迟延,因他不喜悦愚昧人,所以你许的愿应当偿还。

    5你许愿不还,不如不许。

    6不可任你的口使肉体犯罪,也不可在祭司(注:原文作“使者”)面前说是错许了。为何使神因你的声音发怒,败坏你手所做的呢?

    7多梦和多言,其中多有虚幻。你只要敬畏神。

    这段经文虽然古老,但它的教训却历久弥新。当我们与其他信徒一起进到教会崇拜的时候,我们在想什么呢?许多信徒会安静下来默祷,祈求神祝福以下的敬拜。可是,有些信徒却不是这样。他们继续与人交谈,或是还想着昨天的问题。所罗门教导我们要多听,而不要多言。
    在希伯来文中,「愚昧人」包含了很多意思。它可以指一个行事轻率的人,一个自信自恃的人,一个说长道短的人,一个毫无愧疚、不知悔改的人,一个藐视神的人等。因此,一个在敬拜神的时候表现轻慢的人,就正是一个如上所指的「愚昧人」,他不是怀着一颗不配和谦恭的心来到神的面前,还以为他向神祷告是给神面子。事实上,我们无论何时、何地来到神的面前,都必须带着谦恭之心,承认我们的不配;惟有靠着耶稣基督为我们作成的工,我们才得蒙神的接纳。

    所罗门还提醒我们要小心许愿。古代的希伯来人对于许愿非常谨慎和认真,所许的愿定必偿还。所罗门直言:「你许愿不还,不如不许。」我们很容易亏欠的就是在金钱奉献上,我们也许在恳请感动的压力之下轻率认捐,却在落实之时深感为难;又或者决定将赚取的十分之一奉献给神,却觉得要献的十分之一比其馀的十分之九还大。我们必须对神诚实,向神还所许的愿。

    我们是否求神的帮助,让我们能谨慎言语和小心许愿呢?我们每天都要在神面前,省察我们的言语、我们的许愿、我们的意愿。主察看并知道一切。我们必须紧记我们在与谁交往??他不是一般人,而是神自己。没有任何东西能够向他隐瞒。
